PDD, NOS

Nick and I met with Dr. George, Bryant's Developmental Pediatrician, yesterday to discuss her findings from his developmental evaluation a few weeks back.  She diagnosed Bryant as PDD, NOS which is Pervasive Developmental Disorder, not otherwise specified.

The testing she completed found that while Bryant is performing at his age level on some skills he is performing at a 20 month-2 year age level on others.  He performed above his age level (3 yrs) on one skill, that being a shape puzzle which he put together correctly.

Overall, the average 2 1/2 yr old would score a 100% on this test.  The standard deviation of the scale is 15% up and down; 85-100-115. Bryant's score was 87, so he is performing below average, but not off the scale.  This testing does not test IQ so it has nothing to do with how smart he is.  They would not measure IQ until age 6 and that test would be performed by a Pediatric Psychologist.

While it is helpful to finally have a "diagnosis" we still are trying to process what it all means.

I am happy that we were able to obtain this information prior to his school evaluation which is coming up on Monday.  When Bryant turns 3 he will no longer be serviced for speech therapy through BCW.  We will then begin to seek therapy privately like we do with his Occupational therapy.  Because we were a part of BCW we are able to continue therapy services through our county school system.  The good thing about this is he will already be apart of the "system" so that when he enters Kindergarten he will already be able to receive special needs assistance and we will not have to go through any red tape.

With that said the county will determine, after his evaluation on Monday, what services he is eligible for, there are a lot of options available to us. More to come on that later.

We are still on a waiting list to see the Pediatric Neurologist, which will hopefully provide additional answers for us.  We will continue with Bryant's Occupational therapy, privately, once a week.  We will make the transition to private therapy for his speech and we will also be seeking out a Physical Therapist to help us correct his pigeon toes as well as some other areas of development.

A little fun update...

Bryant has been playing with some of the neighborhood kiddos in the afternoons.  He enjoys watching the boys on their bikes and also enjoys watching the girls ride their scooters. He has really taken to Katie (future babysitter!!!).  They even knocked on the door the other day and asked if Bryant could play....one day this will NOT be ok, but this time it's fine.

Lily-Anna (5), Katie (13) and Alyssa (3).  Lily-Anna and Alyssa are sisters and Katie is their neighbor who plays with them almost everyday.
