I actually took Bryant to OT before this appointment. I think it helped him. His sensory system was stimulated and I think that helped him follow through with this process.
This was a neat experience just to sit back and watch him. It was also challenging because I had Bradley in the room with me and he needed attention, so that was hard to juggle, but we made it work. Luckily, I could put him on the floor and he played with this stuffed bear they had in the room. I didn't get a picture because my room was dark, otherwise Bryant would have seen me on the other side of the mirror/window.
As you can see Dr. George would present Bryant with an object and give him direction or ques and he would follow through...(I didn't get a picture of every task, just a few when I wasn't tending to Bradley)...
She gave him a strand of beads and he was to put those beads in a container and then put the lid on the container...He did it!
In this picture he was to stack the blocks. She was seeing how many he could stack. He has done this in OT before and for his age I believe he should be able to get at least 10. I know Bryant can do it, but not today. She gave him several tries, but I think the most he got was 8. He did a great job!
She also directed him to put the blocks in a pattern and pretend it was a train...He did it!
He had to put the shapes in the correct place on the puzzle board...At this point you could tell Bryant was getting tired and bored. All he wanted to do was get down from his chair and play. It is hard for a two year old to sit for this long of a period, but he did it, without any fight. I was so very proud of him. The testing process was about 40 minutes.
I have no idea what this was for, but the buttons were shapes and colors and there was a mirror and it played music. I'm not sure what she was measuring with this toy...
This is a bunch of pretend food, plates, cups, a skillet. She set up a little table simulation. He was to serve, pour and pretend play with this. He did good. This was neat to watch.
Bryant had a hard time with this task, but he eventually did it. He had to put the shape through the hole the correct way. He had trouble figuring out which direction it went, but he worked at it and figured it out.
He had to show is drawing skills. Do lines across, down, left, right, cross and scribble. She also asked him to draw a smiley/happy face and he drew a bunch of squiggle lines. He also had to look at pictures and name the picture. Pick the correct image from a group of images. Pick and object from a group of objects. She also presented him with a little plastic baby and a bottle and he immediately knew what to do with that. He fed the baby very well. She gave him a towel and told him to put the baby nite-nite. He just laid the baby on the towel. That was funny! She got him to make animal noises by recognizing the animal figures she had. He had to string beads onto a string. He has done that a lot in OT and we do that at home. He did great with that.
I was able to come into the room at the end and at that point she wanted to see if he could mimic me standing on one leg. I did it and he did it back. He also got to kick around a soccer ball. She saw how he threw a ball and how he cannot catch, yet. She saw that he could use a zipper and how he jumps...he tries, but the feet don't make it off the ground.
I can't think of everything, but this gives you an idea. He did very well and followed directions. I couldn't hear Bryant talk because he speaks softly when he is nervous or unsure so that was tough.
Every task he would do she would write notes and the packet looked like a standardized test.
You could tell that he was tired and he was also self soothing by putting his hand on his face, by his mouth, rubbing his mouth, leaning on the table with his chin resting in his hand. I just wanted to go in there and give him a pep talk, but couldn't...and give him a drink of water. It was hard to sit back and watch when I knew what to do to help him a little better.
Dr. George was impressed with him and said he has a sweet personality. She said he did a great job for her.
Our next appointment is 9/12. This is for Dr. George to review everything with us and provide us with any feedback. Looking forward to that visit.
